One of my favorite books is about a girl who moves out to western Canada and marries a Mountie. It takes place in the last 1800s and while I would never want to endure the hardships that they had due to the job (ie, freezing cold, sickness, lack of supplies, little communication with the outside world, etc.) the country is beautiful and what girl doesn't love a man in uniform?
